Adobe Photoshop

Publisher: Adobe

Current Version: CS3

Description: Adobe Photoshop has long been considered the ultimate image editing application...and for good reason. With support for multiple layers, import/export from/to almost any graphic format, sophisticated selection tools, non-destructive editing, and extensible architecture, Photoshop is by far one of the most powerful and widely used applications of its kind on the market.

Educational Advantages: Photoshop is perfect for creating sharp graphics for print or for classroom presentations. Educators will appreciate Photoshop's plentiful painting and drawing tools, ability to resize and crop photographs, and ability to export to Web-compatible formats.

Educational Disadvantages: Many advanced features are designed for graphic design and print professionals, not educators. As a result, the application has a high learning curve. In addition, Photoshop is fairly expensive, even with an educator's discount. One recommended alternative is Photoshop Elements, an application that packs almost all of Photoshop's most commonly used features at about 10 percent of the cost.
